Texas Jack: The Old West’s Original Legendary Star

You’ve heard of the iconic Buffalo Bill and Wild Bill Hickok, but now it’s time to learn the incredible true story of their friend and fellow fabled cowboy, Texas Jack Omohundro. Packed with exciting tales of dangerous cattle drives, fierce battles, and theatrical exploits, Texas Jack: America’s First Cowboy is required reading for any Old West aficionado.

Excerpt from Texas Jack – Chapter Four: Holding Down the Fort, pages 36-37:

“On another hunting expedition, a large band of warriors overtook Jack, who, according to letters he sent home, ‘began to think maybe his time had come. The fort had even sent out the word that he had been gone for nearly seven days and had been given up for dead.’ After seven days, Jack feared that he would soon starve and resolved to fight for his life. Having trained his horse to lie down on the ground and remain there while he fired his rifle over the animal, Jack ‘turned loose his murderous fire from over the horse with his repeating rifle . . . and having a nerve of steel, took dead aim and brought down a redskin every fire. They fell so thick and fast they soon retreated. By this time those that formed the ring in his rear, hearing the shooting, had advanced on him. He pulled his horse around and lay down behind him as before, and as soon as the rear forces were close enough he turned loose on them with the same results as the first. As soon as they had retreated out of sight Jack and his horse got up and went back to the fort without a scratch”
