Stilling the Voices
“When the raging voices quieted and the evil presences left me, there would move in gently about me a warm, sweet presence, and a still, small voice would breathe forth inside my being: “I am your God. I am still here. I am still waiting. I still love you.” —Johnny Cash
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” —Romans 8:38–39 NIV
You’re not good enough. You don’t measure up. You’re not worthy of love. The road ahead is too difficult for you.
When messages like these come from other people, they can throw us off our game or make us question ourselves. But when messages like these come from inside us, they have the potential to dominate our interior monologue. In extreme cases, they can paralyze us emotionally—or make us do things we later regret. Johnny Cash’s description of them as “raging . . . evil presences” hints at their power.
Yet Johnny Cash knew from personal experience that these malevolent, lying, troublemaking voices can be stilled. He identifies four truths about God that are more powerful than any other voice in our lives. The first truth is “I am your God.” God has sovereign control over everything. No voice is powerful enough to overrule His verdict on us. And the sovereign Creator of the universe sees us as valuable, important, and so worthy of love that He gave His only Son to save us.
The second truth is “I am still here.” God isn’t going anywhere. The voices give us reason to fear being abandoned. After all, if we’re truly as unlovable, unworthy, or unmemorable as they want us to believe we are, who would want to stay with us? Yet God flips the narrative by saying, “I do.” He sees us at our worst, when the voices are raging, and says, “I still want to walk with you every step of the way.” We may choose to walk away from Him, but He will never walk away from us.
The third truth is “I am still waiting.” God is patient with us. Not only does He see us at our worst, but He also sees the best within us. He sees our potential. He knows exactly what we’re capable of. And He waits patiently for us to discover it. If there’s one thing most of the heroes of the Bible have in common, it’s that they didn’t discover the hero within right away. In fact, many of them looked to be hopeless cases at the outset. Yet God remained patient with them and eventually guided them into situations where they could realize their potential.
The fourth truth is “I still love you.” As the apostle Paul makes clear in Romans 8, nothing can separate us from God’s love. We can build our foundation on it. It’s that solid. When certain areas of our lives seem unstable, we can find our footing on God’s love. He loves us and sees the best in us. We should do the same.
Heavenly Father, thank You for quieting the voices that cause me to doubt myself or question my worth. When doubt and uncertainty start to creep into my life, remind me that nothing can separate me from Your love. Give me the wisdom and opportunity to share the good news of Your love with others who need to hear it. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
